Southern Red Cedar
This is intended to be the first in a series about trees that thrive in Florida. The first one that comes to mind is the Live Oak, but maybe we'll do that next time.
The timing of this article, the beginning of December, 2021, seems the right time to write about the perfect living Christmas Tree - The Southern Red Cedar
As far as weather goes, Christmas doesn't change much about Florida. Sure, it gets cool, but that's about it, except for it being a dry season.
If you're thinking of growing a live Christmas tree, the classics like the Fraser Fir are not a viable choice here in the sunshine state. The Southern Red Cedar or Florida Red Cedar, actually a Juniper, is an excellent alternative here in Mid Florida..
Because Red Cedars are naturally symmetrical, they can look manicured with little effort. It's pyramidal shape adds to its Christmas tree look, and it's emerald green branches fit right in with the holiday theme. Red Cedars grow to about 40 feet and widen as they mature, so you'll need to allow plenty of space for them. Planted in rows, they make great privacy fences and effective windbreaks.
Here's some of their details:
As mentioned, they grow to about 40 feet tall. As expected for a tree being used for Christmas decoration, it is evergreen. It has a moderate growth rate and needs well drained soil in full to part sun. It's cold hardy, so even our worst Florida winters aren't likely to be an issue and it does well in all of Mid Florida.
